One buggy thing that I noticed about the gallery is that if you click on multiple images, the events of the prior clicks aren't canceled, so they all display randomly whenever they are done loading.

Very neat little gallery.
One kind of bizarre issue - I couldn't get all the photos to load by clicking on the thumb. Seems it wouldn't load the image if the new image had the same item name (in xml doc) as the previous. So when I went through and just had name="" to start - none would work. Took me a while of testing to sort out...
In other words - you HAVE to have titles for the image and they all have to be different.
Hi Everyone. This is my first time playing around with AS and Flash. I am having difficulty in both IE and FireFox. All of tps's files will do the "full screen" effect, but the ones I added will only pop up in a new window. I haven't had any problems with adding more than 15 images. The only time I have had error messages was because I've made a typo when adding image file names to the XML doc. But that was my fault. Oh, and one more thing I've noticed, you should not have the same title for more than one image. That somehow prevents the main image to display when the thumbnail is clicked. Apart from that, no problems at all.

The gallery as such is an individual html page in an iframe. The view slideshow link is outside the iframe. So when the gallery page is initially loaded it will show the gallery in the iframe by default and when the view slideshow link is clicked the slideshow (differnt html doc) is loaded into it. It's a simple html with CSS from://www.dynamicdrive.com, called Ultimate Fade-In Slideshow (v1.51). hope that helps.

Well as I said, it should be pretty easy to implement into your site. As for the admin pages, this gallery runs on a xml file, so editing it shouldn't be too hard (you can see the structure is pretty simple). I wrote a little piece of php code a while back that would automatically create a thumbnail from the center of an image, I don't know if I'll be able to find it but if I do I don't mind sharing it.
i am doing my main subject you se... i have been programming a flash gallery but many things i cant managed to work. and i have to be finished with it on monday... and this gallery is exactly what we want... make several groups and pictures in to one.. it is a normal html page.. the administration pages ar made by html, css and php. we have also made databases with mysql.
Kinza: by admin pages do you mean content management systems? Well a simple one wouldn't be too hard to do a simple one(in flex it would proabably be easier), as for website integration, right now its not very friendly (if you mean a flash site). But I have a little bit of free time now until my next exam so I might get round to fixing that, if I can be bothered (so don't hold me to that).
If your talking about a html site it would be pretty easy, just like any other flash object.

Kinza: in the 'images' folder you put your images, separated by gallery (in the same format as it is in the example); Make sure you add the thumbnail of the image to the 'thumb' folder and the orinigal image to the 'org' folder, and that they have the same file name.
Then simply open up images.xml, and add the necessary values.

Oh also I would recommend using TweenLite (or TweenMax) instead of Tweener, its faster, and using it is very similar to Tweener (slight syntax differences) so if youve started using Tweener it won't be hard to change.

Well the only book I've started reading was Essential ActionScript 3.0, but by the time I started I knew most of the stuff I was reading so I stopped, but it seemed like a very useful book for a begginer.
As for your ideas, even if you don't yet know how to code them I would recommend designing exactly how you want it to look once it is coded, it will help you. Also, just because I chose to write everything in classes, doesn't mean its necessarily you should. You might find it easier to create your elements in the flash ide, and theres nothing wrong with that.
I started learning flash about 3 years ago, but I've been learning pretty slowly. I would recommend reading that book (if you can) or simply browsing simple tutorials. kirupa.com is a good site for tutorials, and has a very helpful forum if you have problems.
i saw that you used actionscript though to create the backgrounds for the thumbnails as well as the image viewer. did you make these first with movieclips and drawing tools on the stage and then translate that into code? by the way, how long have you been programming? I know i'm probably getting way over my head here trying to program classes, but i have virtually no experience programming and I just started around a month and a half ago. however, i want to learn fast because i'm an impatient person. can you recommend any good books or tutorials that you've used to learn some of this stuff? I understand what you're talking about when it comes to designing everything before you program, but I have so many ideas that I could design on the stage but I would have no clue how to translate that into programming language. For instance, I want to make a thumbnail gallery that's in a grid pattern (7 by 6) or something like that, and when you click on a thumbnail I want it to animate in from a small dot into a full size image. I think I could use Tweener for this. I want each individual thumbnail to have it's own preloader, a bar for example, so when the SWF loads in each thumbnail has a progress bar on it to indicate load time.
As you can see, I know what I want to do but it's hard to translate that into what I have to program. Any suggestions on how I can get better?
scarcity22: How I usually start, is by designing what I want to make in flash (exacly how I want it to look). From there, I separate it into the separate elements, in this gallery it was: the image viewer, the thumbnails (the container for the thumbnails), the individual thumbnail, and the gallery chooser. From there, I can just individually make each of these, I chose to use classes to make them. Sometimes if its a big project with a lot of elements, I like to quickly sketch on paper these elements, so I can see what element is going to extend or be a child of what etc (like a tree driagram).
After that I make the base file (Script.as) and put in any necessary code to preload the file (if I want a preloader), and I load in all the necessary files (such as images.xml in this gallery). After this is done I begin to write the individual components, testing all the time as I do. I usually start with the smallest one, in this gallery the first thing I made was the thumbnail class. When thats done, I'll create its containers or parents (ThumbHolder.as) and so on.
Thats generally how I do things, I don't know how efficient it is or if its similar to how others do it by I hope thats helped you.

I'm just wondering however... when you thought of this idea to make the XML image gallery, how did you go about writing it? I feel really daunted about taking on a project with a lot of code because I'm still a beginner and to tell you, i'm a little bit sketchy on where to start. I look at your AS files and I can read them and understand them, but if I had to write this on my own I'd be lost. How do you go about writing code? Do you always use a reference manual and how do you know which things do what for your purposes?

leobruno: for the "unexpected fiel format" (you probably figured it now) you have to use latest version of flash (Flash CS at this time).
The file is not empty, it is composed by multiple external files, I tested now and works ok when you compile it.

I open the file "index.fla" on Flash CS and no have nothing inside o.O

Seriously weird behavior on FireFox and Safari on OS X - somewhat randomly when you click Fullscreen, rather than the screen opening it simply opens a new window with the jpeg in it. When it *does* work, the button to exit fullscreen doesn't work at all. Still pawing through the AS, but it's very curious. Runs fine on my Windows test box.

Sorry about late reply, yes the gallery is in AS3. I have been asked in the past to convert it to AS2, and I have tried. However I failed, :( my AS2 isn't as good as it used to be and I don't believe I will be able to convert it in the future, so I'm sorry knorrhane but I can't help you now.
However if anyone else wishes to convert the gallery or modify it in any way feel free to.
So, the gallery use AS3 or AS2 ? :D

Sorry, but I don't think I can help you with that. I don't know much about XML and only very little about flash (yet). I'm going by my "trial and error" system to customize the gallery.
Do you actually mean the gallery chooser, like Gallery 1, Gallery 2 and so on (how many galleries do you have?) or is it the width of the thumbnail scroller?

dorit: You won't notice the changes until you preview or publish because the changes have yet to be compiled
tpspoons, good luck with the exams! I managed to find out by myself some how to do some of the customizations I asked you about before. I'll post them here just in case anyone needs to know.
1. disable full screen option: I haven't managed to disable the option as such but when hovering over the image at least the "view full screen" doesn't show anymore. Delete the following line from ImageViewer.as: imageHolder.addChild (full);. I don't think that's the correct way to do it, but it works for me.
2. increasing the width of the image title: increase the number in the ImageView.as file in the following line: imageLabel.x = maxWidth - 10 - imageLabel.width;
3. changed the font size of the image title: again ImageView.as > change number in this line: format.size = 11;
!!!!One thing I realized after lots of playing around with this fantastic gallery is that changes take not effect in the brower unless you open and preview (Control + Enter) the .fla file in Flash. Curios, I know, but that's how it works on my PC.
I hope that was of help to someone.

This is a great gallery. It is very attractive. I was trying it out with my own images and I can get the first gallery to load but the gallery 2 and 3 don't load.
Can you think of any reason for that. There is not that much to change other than the images folder. I keep getting Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2035: URL Not Found. when I click on gallery 2. I am on CS3 and I can't find anything in the AS that suggests I should have to change anything.
If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

My bad, it was 118. But I read somewhere that you should use int instead of Math.round or Math.floor, better for performance. Doubt it'l make any difference though.

to solve the blurry-problem you have to change line 118 in ImageViewer.as to this:
TweenLite.to (this, 1.5, { x:Math.floor((Root.stage.stageWidth - src.width - 20) * .5), ease:Strong.easeInOut } );
The reason why it's so blurry is the x-cordinate of the Field. You have to use full numbers and not numbers like 0.34 or 0.6. You can solve it with Math.floor function. I hope I could help.
I change the code but I think it didnt fix it, it only appears clear when image is at full screen but when it is at normal size the text is still blurry, the image with the bull for example.
adrian: Your right. The x and y values for the fullscreen icon were already converted to integers, I just forgot to convert the imageViewer's x values.
If you change line 108 in ImageViewer.as to this:
TweenLite.to (this, 1.5, { x:int ((Root.stage.stageWidth - src.width - 20) * .5), ease:Strong.easeInOut } );
it should work fine
The "view fullscreen" button is sometimes blurry, do you know how that can be fixed? If you know the location I can update the fla for you. You probably need to convert _y and _x to integer but I dont know where.
thanks a lot tpsoons and dorit too, I know how edit the vars in root.as. But in case my big pictures are panoramics, and I seemed if the thumbnails are rectangular it will be best for the presentation.
Alise: Like dorit said, if your thumbs are square you can edit those vars. Because I was only using square thumbnails I only considered them being square, again, I'll look into making non-square thumbnails available.

Adrian: Thanks alot, it works better now. But I still need to fix the alignment on smaller resolutions. Your right, it opens the image file when you click on the name. It also opens it (at the moment, before I code a better method) if your image resolution is smaller than the screen size.
I just noticed now that you can click title to open the image file. It's nice.
Tpspoons: I resized your swf so that it fits in our preview and now preview is aligned better. Your code didn't like that our site resizes the content to fit, now its at 100% and is aligned nicely. Users please clear your cache if you like to see it aligned correctly.

raisa: Those arn't next and previous buttons :P Their just an arrow showing which direction your scrolling in. Try choosing another image (the first one is basically the same proportions as the screen so you can't see it).

as adrian said, plus when you click on next and previous on the full screen, they dont work :(
There is a small aslignment issue when gallery is viewed at a smaller size (like above) do you think a mask over the gallery would solve this? So that thumbs are only visible over that box in background.
